University Station Project Triumphs at ICE West Midlands Awards 2024

We’re thrilled to announce that the University Station project at the University of Birmingham has won three prestigious awards at the 2024 ICE West Midlands Awards, including the Team Achievement Award, Large Project Award, and the coveted Overall Project of the Year. This recognition underscores the exceptional collaboration and engineering excellence behind this vital regional transport hub.

The project has transformed one of the region’s busiest stations, originally built in 1978 to accommodate 700,000 passengers a year. Now, with over 3.5 million users annually and capacity for up to 7.2 million in the future, University Station offers a vastly improved experience for passengers, with two stunning new building pavilions, wider entrances and exits, and better customer facilities, serving both the University of Birmingham and Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Warren Jukes, Managing Director of Associated Architects, said:

“This project demonstrates just how transformative projects can be when working closely with so many key stakeholders. University Station is now a true gateway, for students and hospital visitors”

The development was a collaborative effort between Transport for West Midlands (TfWM), West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA), West Midlands Rail Executive (WMRE), alongside University of Birmingham, NHS University Hospitals Birmingham Trust, Birmingham City Council, and Network Rail SLC Rail and VolkerFitzpatrick—a testament to the power of teamwork and innovation in reshaping the infrastructure of our city.

Huge thanks to everyone involved! This success reflects the hard work and dedication of all parties, and we couldn’t be prouder.
