Hamilton SEND Secondary School in Handsworth, Birmingham, has completed; providing a new specialist learning environment for 160 pupils with special educational needs and disabilities.
Commissioned by Birmingham City Council through the Constructing West Midlands Framework, the new secondary school has transformed an underutilised brownfield site into a purpose-designed environment that significantly expands the school’s teaching and support facilities.
Generously sized classrooms have been designed around 2:1 student-to-teacher ratios, alongside a wide range of specialist teaching spaces for horticulture, science, food technology, design technology and art. These facilities expand the school’s curriculum and create opportunities for pupils to develop skills and interests in different ways.
The specific needs of autistic pupils have also shaped the design. Dedicated facilities include an activity studio, sensory room, occupational therapy rooms and reflection rooms for each classroom, providing a variety of spaces to support learning, wellbeing and individual needs.
Outside, a series of distinct play spaces provides opportunities for guided activities, social interaction and different forms of play. The wider site has also been carefully reconfigured to improve how pupils, staff and visitors arrive and move around the school.
A new entrance from Soho Road provides a clear arrival point, while a dedicated minibus and taxi loop can accommodate up to 20 minibuses during drop-off and collection. New parking arrangements help address the constraints of the surrounding area, while a double-layered entrance provides an additional level of security.
The school also looks beyond its own boundaries. Its new hall and Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) will be available for community sports use in conjunction with the local Gurdwara, creating opportunities for the facilities to support the wider Handsworth community.
The completion of Hamilton SEND Secondary School marks an important step forward for the school, providing a flexible and inclusive environment that expands educational opportunities while responding carefully to the needs of its pupils and community.
