Architect Sara Hurley, from our Leeds studio, recently visited Sheffield College’s City Centre Campus as a guest speaker, delivering two inspiring sessions to first and second year T Level students on the Built Environment pathway.

Each 90 min session aimed to help students explore the breadth of careers available across construction and the wider built environment.

Sara introduced students to the many routes into architecture and related professions, from apprenticeships and university degrees to hybrid learning pathways. She also shared her own career journey, reflecting on the value of exploring different options and the importance of following interests and strengths rather than assuming a linear path.

Using one of her recent projects, Plumstead College, as a case study, Sara demonstrated how design, coordination and sustainability principles translate into real-world practice. She also discussed the core skills that underpin the profession including creativity, problem-solving, collaboration and a commitment to improving communities.

Promoting sector diversity was another key theme, with Sara highlighting her involvement in NAWIC (National Association of Women in Construction) Yorkshire branch and the wider industry’s efforts to drive inclusion and equity.

Sara said:
“The students engaged enthusiastically throughout, asking thoughtful questions about BIM, software, business development roles, interdisciplinary collaboration and the architectural apprenticeship route. Through the interactive activities, it was great to see them start to link their own interests, skills and motivations to potential future roles within the industry.”

Following the sessions, Sara has been invited to return for further small-group seminars with design and surveying students, as well as a repeat talk for next year’s cohort.
