Groundbreaking has taken place at the University of Wolverhampton’s £50m School of Architecture and the Built Environment, which will provide space for more than 1,200 students on the site of the former Springfield Brewery.
Work had already been underway on the site, clearing old and preparing heritage buildings for refurbishment. This includes piling and enabling works as well as the internal demolition of the listed buildings on the site. Work on these important heritage buildings has been done in co-ordination with conservation specialists, planners and Historic England.
The ceremony was attended by University of Wolverhampton Vice Chancellor Geoff Layer and Deputy Vice Chancellor Jackie Dunn. A time capsule was buried on-site to with the intention of containing & preserving the historical culture of the brewery that occupied the site before.
