On site at Stechford and Wolverhampton as police station refurbishments progress

Work is progressing on the refurbishment of Stechford Police Station and Wolverhampton Police Station, where Associated Architects is delivering two major projects for West Midlands Police that will modernise operational facilities while allowing policing services to continue throughout construction.

Delivered through the Pagabo framework, the projects represent a significant investment in two important West Midlands Police buildings. The work is improving their functionality and long-term resilience, while creating better environments for officers, staff and the communities they serve.

At both stations, the refurbishment includes the renewal of mechanical, electrical and public health systems, replacement windows, upgraded internal finishes and improved welfare facilities. Internal layouts are also being reconfigured to make better use of space and accommodate increased occupancy.

Decarbonisation is an important part of the work at both stations. Improvements to existing heating systems will reduce the reliance on fossil fuels and supporting a transition towards lower-carbon operation. At Stechford, rooftop photovoltaic panels are also being installed to generate renewable electricity on site and further improve the building’s energy performance.

The projects also include improvements to public-facing facilities. Stechford will benefit from a new public contact office, two new passenger lifts and an extension to the existing car park. At Wolverhampton the community will benefit from a refurbished front office facility, while a new passenger lift will provide improved access to the custody block.

One of the defining features of both projects is that they are being delivered within fully operational police stations. Construction is being carefully phased to allow officers, staff and the public to continue using the buildings throughout the works, with temporary arrangements maintaining access to essential services.

Successfully delivering projects in live operational environments requires careful planning, close collaboration and an understanding of how critical public services function. It is an approach that has become a key part of our work across the blue light sector.

For more than 20 years, Associated Architects has delivered projects for police forces and other public sector organisations, from refurbishment and extensions to new-build facilities. Our multidisciplinary experience spans architecture, interior design, landscape design, masterplanning, project management, cost management and contract administration.

As work continues at both stations, the projects demonstrate how existing public buildings can be adapted to meet changing operational needs while improving their environmental performance and supporting a lower-carbon future.
