New Horizons for Birmingham City University at Alexander Stadium

We recently had the privilege of joining Birmingham City University (BCU) for the official opening of their new facilities at the Alexander Stadium. It was an inspiring event, attended by BCU’s newly appointed Chancellor, Ade Adepitan, and the renowned Olympic Gold Medallist, Dame Denise Lewis. BCU’s vision as the stadium is to provide cutting-edge learning environments that foster innovation, collaboration, and academic excellence.

The new £4 million development is a strong investment in the future of BCU’s School of Sport and Life Sciences, which is part of the Faculty of Health, Education, and Life Sciences. This specialised fitout provides expanded spaces for key programs such as Sport and Exercise Science, allowing the university to continue developing highly skilled graduates prepared to make an impact in health and sports industries.

As a vital Legacy Tenant of Alexander Stadium, BCU has secured dedicated teaching spaces within both the East and West stands. These learning spaces and labs are designed to accommodate both standard and specialised courses, offering students access to resources and environments that support hands-on learning and real-world application.

Beyond the classrooms, BCU students and faculty will also benefit from shared access to some of the top facilities delivered in our recent project with Birmingham City Council. The stadium offers an array of modern amenities that further enhance the student experience, including a state-of-the-art gym, high-quality changing facilities, competition-standard tracks and infields, and a spacious, welcoming café. Additionally, students will have access to meeting and conference areas designed to foster collaboration and professional development.

This project would not have been possible without the exceptional efforts of our design and construction partners: Arup, Cundall, McLaughlin & Harvey Ltd, and King & Moffatt Building Services. Together, we have created a space that will serve BCU’s students and staff for years to come, supporting the university’s commitment to education, innovation, and community impact.
