Associated Architects is pleased to mark the topping out of The Global Health Building at the University of Oxford. This milestone represents a significant step forward in the delivery of a purpose-built, future-facing academic facility that will support world-leading research, teaching and collaboration in the field of global health.
Located at the University’s Old Road Campus, The Global Health Building will bring together Nuffield Department of Medicine with the Nuffield Department of Population Health. The 4,700 square metre building will house approximately 400 staff and students, providing a modern and flexible environment that fosters cross-disciplinary engagement.
Leading the Way in Sustainable Design
The building is targeting Passivhaus certification, which is a rare and ambitious goal for a higher education facility of this size and complexity. In line with the University’s zero carbon strategy, Associated Architects also led on the University’s first full Life Cycle Carbon Assessment (LCA), applying all life cycle modules in accordance with BS EN 15978. This comprehensive approach ensures that both embodied and operational carbon performance are considered from design through to operation.
Spaces That Encourage Interaction
The building has been designed to support both formal and informal collaboration, with adaptable teaching spaces and dedicated breakout areas. These spaces will help facilitate interdisciplinary learning, support existing and proposed Master’s programmes, and create new opportunities for engagement with external partners.
A key part of the design approach was to ensure the building connects strongly with its natural surroundings. Views over the adjacent woodland and brook areas have been prioritised through the use of horizontal ribbon windows, which maximise daylight, reduce energy use and promote wellbeing. Internal features such as green walls and biophilic design elements enhance this connection to nature and support the health of building users.
Collaborative Delivery
This project has brought together a highly experienced multidisciplinary team, including CPW, Gillespies, Ramboll, Jensen Hughes, WSP and Ridge and Partners LLP. The building is being delivered by Morgan Sindall Construction.
We thank all those involved in reaching this important point and look forward to seeing The Global Health Building become a catalyst for research, innovation and global impact at the University of Oxford.
