Centre for Human Brain Health opens at University of Birmingham

The Centre for Human Brain Health (CHBH,) at the University of Birmingham, opened its doors to staff and researchers recently.

CHBH is a collaboration between the College of Life and Environmental Sciences, and the College of Medical and Dental Sciences.

University of Birmingham’s School of Psychology required new purpose built accommodation to support their programme of research a specifically a new building to accommodate MRI and MEG scanners together with associated support and research facilities.

The new building is located immediately to the north of Gisbert Kapp Building and to connects back to Gisbert Kapp via a new enclosed footbridge. The footbridge provides a convenient pedestrian link from the School Office and Reception, located on the ground floor of 52, to the first floor of CHBH for staff, researchers and members of the public participating in research projects.

The creation of this building allowed for the expansion and continuation of the inter-disciplinary research currently carried out by the department, which looks to further understanding in neuropsychiatric and neurological disorders such as schizophrenia, psychosis, epilepsy, traumatic brain injury, dementia and sleep disorders. The vision of the School of Psychology is to cross the boundaries of traditional academic and clinical disciplines in order to transform understanding of the human brain, recognising that to achieve the goal of personalised brain health it must first be known what constitutes a healthy brain and how lifestyle, developmental, and societal factors interact and contribute to this endeavour. This will be achieved with the state-of-the-art-technology and expertise from different thematic areas and internationally recognised scientific and clinical research staff.
