Kier Appointed to Landmark Redevelopment of Greenwich College Campus

Associated Architects is happy to announce that Kier have been appointed by London South East Colleges (LSEC) on the transformative redevelopment of the Greenwich campus. This ambitious multi-million project will see the demolition of existing structures and the construction of a state-of-the-art educational facility.

Located on Plumstead Road, the new college will be a cornerstone of a broader masterplan that includes residential developments by L&Q, enhanced public amenities, and significant improvements to the public realm. Our design aims to create a vibrant, attractive space for students, staff, and the community, integrating cutting-edge digital technologies in line with Future Greenwich and the Mayor’s ‘Smart City Strategy’. We are proud to target BREEAM Outstanding certification for this project.

In close collaboration with the College’s curriculum and timetable team, we have designed a 5,500 sq.m flexible facility. This new facility will not only increase the number of Guided Learning Hours but also establish a strong civic presence, enhancing the college’s connection with its surroundings.

The design features two blocks divided by expressive stair cores and will include a café, student support services, and breakout areas for communal study and learning. A Learning Resource Centre and Theatre space will occupy the first floor, while the main teaching spaces will be located on the upper floors. The open ground floor plan ensures a strong visual connection throughout the activity spaces, maintaining an active frontage. The central breakout space, with its atrium and feature staircase, creates an inviting link to the upper floors.

Sustainability is at the heart of our design, with rooftop air source heat pumps, an efficient ambient loop heating and cooling system, photovoltaic panels, and a solar green roofing system. Despite the extensive redevelopment, the campus will remain operational throughout the project and we look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on the local community.
