Maksims Uljanovs

Position: Architect & BIM Manager

Maks joined AA in 2014 after completing his BA (Hons) at Birmingham School of Architecture and Design, Birmingham City University. Later, he completed MArch and Part III at Welsh School of Architecture, Cardiff University. He is a BIM Manager for the practice and actively promotes the development of digital tools and processes as a key member of the INNOVATE Working Group.

During his time at Associated Architects, Maks has worked on various projects in higher education, including new builds and renovations for universities like Leicester, Wolverhampton, Birmingham, and Royal Holloway, University of London.

With experience in designing laboratories, teaching spaces, research facilities, and offices, Maks currently is part of the team delivering the groundbreaking Molecular Sciences complex at the University of Birmingham.
In addition to his architectural skills, Maks is experienced in BIM related workflows and has taken on the role of digital/BIM coordinator for multiple projects. Maks has also shared his BIM expertise at an event for the University of Birmingham, highlighting its real-life benefits.

Experience

Molecular Sciences, University of Birmingham: Phased scheme to add to the University’s sciences portfolio providing research laboratories and academic research offices which will be the campus’ largest building, £400m

Emily Wilding Building, Royal Holloway University of London: 10,500sq.m new build BREEAM Excellent library and student centre in sensitive historic campus setting designed using Passivhaus design principles, £42m

Cyber Quarter, University of Wolverhampton / Hereford Council: £7m new build located in Hereford, designed using a low embodied carbon approach that has sequestered 30 tonnes of CO2 compared to a steel/concrete equivalent which would have emitted 563 tonnes of CO2.

The Old Gym, University of Birmingham: Saving it from demolition, our refurbishment works created a variety of teaching spaces including an 81-seat lecture theatre, study spaces and an open plan office spaces, £5m. Shortlisted for an AJ Retrofit Award.

National Buried Infrastructure Facility, University of Birmingham: A ‘one of it’s kind’ facility, the University of Birmingham’s NBIF includes a variety of research spaces including a unique 5m x 10m x 5m deep pit, £8m.

The Green Heart, University of Birmingham: Landscaping project to open up a 12-acre space in the centre of the University’s campus, £12m
