Associated Architects responded to the challenge of delivering Travelodge’s specification within a sensitive conservation area on the edge of the Jewellery Quarter. The project included a 100 bedroom hotel and 5-storey office building, delivered as part of a larger redevelopment on the site of the former Museum of Science and Industry.
The location of the hotel within the historic Jewellery Quarter offered a number of challenges which were met with a contemporary but contextual design solution. The hotel itself abuts a Grade I Listed, small scale building on Charlotte Street, and backs onto a further Listed workshop, so it was important that the massing and materials respected and complemented this.
Extensive studies were undertaken within the local as well as wider area to determine a palette of materials and colours which were then utilised in the design. The resultant development provides 100 bedrooms, ground floor café and reception area and 950m2 of lettable office space overlooking a central landscaped square.
