Resident’s Roof-level Clubhouse
Tyndall Street, Cardiff is a residential development by IM Properties, consisting of 307 apartments with a mixture of one bed, two bed and studio apartments. A residents’ clubhouse at roof level overlooking the bay will be the main feature of the building’s roofscape.
It will play a central role in creating a local focal point within Cardiff’s Capital Quarter Development as a whole; delivering high quality accommodation for the private rented sector in the heart of he city centre with views across the city and the water front.
Working with precast concrete allowed us to begin with a simple form. We then introduced recessed areas into the central block of the building to break up the massing, but also to provide a recognisable entrance into the building
The concrete frame will be the most striking feature of the building’s façade, softened by the recessed patterned panels and curtain walling to provide relief.
Further relief is provided through a careful choice of colours. The main block of the building will be constructed from an off white acid etched precast concrete finish, with the recessed central element formed from a charcoal grey acid etched precast concrete finish.
The tower will be constructed from a precast acid etched concrete solution. With the recessed area proposed to be a charcoal grey colour with flat panels either side of the curtain walling. The protruding parts of the tower will be constructed from off white acid etched concrete panels.
The quartz grey curtain walling is set back 140mm from the building’s façade to provide further relief and give the façade some depth.
The amenity space at the top of the building will be clad in off white acid etched precast concrete. With elements of the façade on the main build extending up and over on the southern edge to form a sheltered seating area.
The form of the building is broken up into 3 elements in order to break up the massing of the building but also to provide relief to the building’s façade. The central portion is recessed to the front and rear of the building and will be formed from darker charcoal grey precast concrete panels.
The summit of the building is set back from the main façade forming a terraced seated areas for resident dining and socialising. The form of this residents’ Skybar is the prominent feature on the building’s roofscape. From here, the roof steps down to depict the central core and associated spaces, and then down again to from an external residents’ roof garden, providing an oasis from the hustle and bustle of Cardiff’s busy city life.
