Associated Architects is pleased to announce unanimous approval for the redevelopment of Mott Street and Nightingale Works from Birmingham City Council planning committee. The scheme, delivered on behalf of Cordia UK, will deliver 179 high-quality build-to-rent apartments in the heart of the historic Jewellery Quarter, transforming a disused industrial estate and sensitively restoring several heritage buildings.

The development comprises 124 apartments at Mott Street and 55 at Nightingale Works, including one-, two- and three-bedroom homes across new-build and conversion elements. Nightingale Works, will be brought back into active use through sensitive restoration combined with new-build interventions, while Mott Street will provide a new six-storey residential building that complements the surrounding townscape.

Designed to promote community living, the project features a central landscaped residential courtyard, public plaza, and 616 sq. m of shared resident amenity space across both buildings. A total of 343 sq. m of commercial space and two live/work units will further activate the site and support local enterprise, creating up to 32 new jobs.

A key focus of the scheme is accessibility and inclusion, with 30% of the homes meeting Part M4(2) standards. The development will support the ongoing regeneration of the Jewellery Quarter, reinforcing its identity as a vibrant mixed-use neighbourhood while respecting its architectural legacy.

Associated Architects is providing both architecture and landscape design services, ensuring the project delivers a high-quality urban living environment that celebrates heritage, supports local economic growth, and meets the needs of modern renters.

Our designs for a new Pastoral Hub at Haberdashers’ Boys’ School, in Hertfordshire, have received unanimous approval at planning committee. The transformative project will create a striking new entrance and reception to the school and a stunning new dining hall building, alongside a new landscaped quad that offers attractive outdoor amenity space and boosts biodiversity.

The Pastoral Hub will serve as the vibrant, social heart of the school, fostering student wellbeing and strengthening staff-student relationships.

Key features include:

Enhanced pastoral care facilities: a welcoming Entrance Hub housing a reception, offices, and medical rooms, to support the pastoral needs of students.

Improved arrival experience and security: a reimagined reception area offering a secure and inviting gateway to the school, with a stone portico providing a striking focal point.

Spaces for wellbeing: purpose-built areas designed to nurture a supportive environment for both students and staff.

At the centre of our proposal is a dining hall designed to meet the school’s operational needs while serving as a communal gathering space. The hall features a stunning low-carbon triangulated timber roof structure, composed of trussed glulam beams and a CLT slab.

Sustainability is at the core of this project. The dining hall follows a fabric-first approach, enhancing the building’s thermal envelope to reduce energy demand and carbon footprint. Passive design strategies have been employed to minimise energy use for ventilation and cooling, reflecting the school’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

A retro-first approach was adopted for the Entrance Hub, repurposing a former classroom block and bringing it up to modern standards, with new high performance windows and hybrid natural ventilation heat recovery units.

The landscaping proposals will enrich the natural environment, creating better connectivity between the school’s exceptional green spaces and promoting ecological diversity. These enhancements align with the school’s vision of a greener, more sustainable estate.

At the Planning committee meeting Councillor David Lambert from Hertsmere Borough Council Commented:

“This project is a significant step forward for the school, enhancing its facilities, safeguarding, and sustainability goals. The dining hall will not only provide top-tier, purpose-built spaces but also reflect modern, environmentally responsible design.

“Both elements of the project have been carefully considered, balancing functionality with sensitivity to the site’s historic context. The landscaped quad will enrich spaces for socialising and study while complementing the historic surroundings. Additionally, the development’s renewable energy measures and biodiversity net gain showcase its outstanding commitment to sustainability.”

We are proud to support Haberdashers’ Boys’ School in creating a forward-thinking, nurturing environment that prioritises wellbeing, sustainability, and community. Our independent school experience spans over 40 years. Our knowledge of best practice allows us to achieve best value and deliver high quality, flexible environments.

Associated Architects is proud to have been working closely with University College Birmingham (UCB) as they received the go ahead for their redevelopment of Cambrian Wharf, a transformative student accommodation project. The project is set to revitalise an underutilised site in the heart of Birmingham’s City Centre.

Cambrian Wharf will consist of two tall buildings, offering over 1,200 beds. The development aims to provide high-quality accommodation that meets the needs of students, while also contributing to the overall transformation of the urban landscape.

The landmark project will serve as a consolidation UCB’s existing sites across the city, which includes the Associated Architects-designed, RIBA Award Winning, McIntyre House. Cambrian Wharf will enhance the UCB offering by providing convenient, walking distance, access to their Jewellery Quarter Campus. This strategic location ensures that students can experience the vibrancy of the city while enjoying a cohesive and inclusive educational environment.

One of the standout features of Cambrian Wharf is its remarkable contribution to the revitalisation of the canal network. Bordering the city’s iconic Jewellery Quarter, this development acts as a key canal route marker, reactivating a tired section of the canal and transforming it into a lively and welcoming part of the city. The increased activity and improved surveillance in the area will enhance safety and create a vibrant atmosphere for both residents and visitors.

The design of Cambrian Wharf is bold, modern and the urban landscaping will provide first-class spaces for both public and private use. The development will feature a range of communal areas, including quiet study spaces, social areas, private courtyards, and public green spaces. These spaces will foster a sense of community, encourage collaboration, and provide opportunities for relaxation and contemplation.

“We are thrilled to be working with UCB on their strategy and vision for Cambrian Wharf. This stands to be a transformative student accommodation project that will make a lasting impact on the urban landscape of the city.” said Warren Jukes, Managing Director at Associated Architects.

He continues, “This project will focus on delivering high-quality architecture, sustainable practices, and creating vibrant communal spaces. Cambrian Wharf looks to not only provide an exceptional living experience for students but also contribute to the ongoing revitalisation of this area of Birmingham City Core.”

Associated Architects is committed to delivering innovative designs that enhance the built environment and create spaces that inspire. With Cambrian Wharf, the firm continues its legacy of excellence and reinforces its dedication to sustainable urban development.

Celebrating a New Era for Hill West Primary School as Project Gets the Green Light!

We are thrilled to announce that Hill West Primary School, has been granted planning permission. This is an exciting milestone towards creating a vibrant and nurturing learning environment for the pupils in Sutton Coldfield.

Part of the Arthur Terry Learning Partnership (ATLP), Hill West Primary is dedicated to empowering students to become innovative learners who embody resilience and creativity. The aim of the new school building is to meet the rigorous standards set by the Department for Education (DfE) while providing ample space for students to thrive.

With a capacity to accommodate various age groups, from Nursery to Key Stage 2, the new building will be a hub of learning and discovery.

Designed with the DfE’s guidelines in mind, the layout of the school ensures clear separation between different key stages, allowing for focused and effective teaching. Early years and Key Stage 1 pupils will enjoy direct access to external play spaces, promoting outdoor learning and exploration.

The design of the new school building is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. With predominantly two-storey wings, the building features brick facing materials and aluminium windows, blending seamlessly with the surrounding environment. The choice of materials reflects a commitment to sustainability and low maintenance, ensuring that the school remains a valuable asset to the community for years to come.

Key features of the design include a spacious double-height hall that serves as a multi-purpose space for assemblies, dining, and sports activities. The project incorporates sustainable features such as photovoltaic panels (PVs) integrated into the roof, contributing to the school’s net-zero carbon goal. A green roof comprising a mixed wildflower selection of planting to enhances biodiversity, while a high-performing fabric first approach to the envelope ensure energy efficiency underscores our commitment to renewable energy and environmental stewardship.

The scale and form of the new building are in line with the existing school structures, ensuring continuity and cohesion within the site.

As we embark on this exciting and challenging journey, we extend our thanks to the local community for their support and collaboration. Together, we are shaping a brighter future for the students of Hill West Primary School.

We are thrilled to announce the approval of an application for Listed Building Consent for the first phase of building improvement works for the Barber Institute of Fine Arts, University of Birmingham. This phase of works will commence on site this autumn, with the refurbishment of the Lady Barber Gallery and the Reading Room located on the first floor in the north-western side of the building in the 1970s extension, the Reserve Gallery.

The main building was designed by Robert Atkinson in the 1930s in the Art Deco style and was subsequently extended in the 1960s and 1970s. The extension was originally designed as the main reserve space to hold artworks, and over time, the building’s operational needs and internal spaces have been adapted to suit, the Lady Barber Gallery will now host temporary art exhibitions. The Institute is described as being, “home to ‘one of the finest small art galleries in Europe’, and a concert hall with ‘perfect acoustics, comfort, and rest for the eye’, all whilst being housed in the heart of a busy university campus in a major metropolis.”

The building was first recognised for its architectural heritage merit in 1981 when it was awarded Grade II Listed Building status. Recently, in 2020, it was awarded Grade I status due to its exquisite architectural qualities.

The latest proposed features and finishes of the refurbishment have been reviewed in respect of the Grade I Listed Building Status, considering the sensitivity of the building’s Conservation Plan and Heritage Significance.

We are pleased to announce that the latest in our continued catalog of commercial retrofit projects in Birmingham’s city core – 35 Newhall Street, has been given the green light by planners. This 1980s building, sitting at almost 70,000sq.ft will now undergo an extensive transformation.

We’re embarking on an extensive retrofit that will not only enhance the aesthetics but also bring modern tenant amenities to this, somewhat dated, six-storey building. The existing building lacks this tenant amenity space so the repurposing part of the existing plant room will create a brand-new sky lounge and an inviting external terrace on the south-western portion of the roof.. The external facade will receive a much-needed face-lift, reusing the existing cladding and re-tinting stonework. With plans that aim to breathe new life into the building, whilst sustainably retaining the existing system, bringing it more in line with other commercial offices in the Colmore Business District.

Sustainability is key, the retrofit itself reducing embodied carbon in the spirit of reuse, this project will also install electric vehicle charging points in the basement car park, in addition to a 44-space cycle hub, complete with lockers and changing facilities, in order to promote greener modes of transport into the office.

The existing entrance on Newhall Street, though understated, will undergo a transformation of its own. The project will replace the existing canopy with a sleek portal with perimeter lighting.

The goal is to reposition 35 Newhall within the Birmingham office market by creating a fresh identity that attracts tenants seeking modern, forward-thinking workspaces.

We are thrilled to announce that Associated Architects LLP’s plans for the regeneration of York Place in Newcastle-under-Lyme have been unanimously approved! This significant milestone marks a major step forward in revitalising a key part of the town centre and creating a vibrant, sustainable hub for the community.

The proposal for York Place encompasses the construction of two four-storey buildings, covering 65,000 square feet. These buildings will offer a mix of retail spaces, food and beverage, and commercial offices. Additionally, a new public realm will be created, featuring a landscaped external public square. This will not only provide an inviting space for people to gather but also offer better connections within the surrounding conservation area.

We are committed to sustainability and reducing our carbon footprint and the York Place project will be designed as Net-Zero carbon in operation, in line with the Council’s ambitious target of achieving Net Zero by 2030. By adopting green practices and utilising eco-friendly technologies, we aim to create a development that not only meets the needs of today but also contributes positively to the environment for generations to come.

One of the key benefits of this regeneration is the enhancement of the town centre’s night-time economy. Currently, Newcastle-under-Lyme lacks a significant cultural heart. This lack of activity has had a detrimental impact on the overall vibrancy of the town centre. With the development of York Place, we envision a thriving hub that will cater to a diverse range of interests and foster a sense of community.

Given the site’s location at the junction of High Street and Merrill Street, it falls within one of the borough council’s designated “conservation areas.” These areas are intended to safeguard Newcastle-under-Lyme’s architectural and historical heritage. We are pleased to report that the proposed redevelopment has received positive feedback from council officers. They have stated that the project will “protect and enhance” the character and appearance of nearby buildings, including the Grade II listed Old Bull’s Head pub.

The council’s report further emphasises the positive impact that this development will have on the vitality and viability of the town centre. It will encourage a greater range of people to use the area for various purposes, potentially expanding its appeal beyond traditional business hours. This infusion of energy and activity is precisely what Newcastle-under-Lyme needs to thrive and flourish. The project is an integral part of the wider £30 million regeneration initiative in the nearby Ryecroft area. This collaborative effort will breathe new life into Newcastle-under-Lyme, ensuring a brighter future for both residents and visitors. We are proud to be a part of this transformative process, which aligns with Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council’s successful bid for the Future High Streets Fund (FHSF).

The approval of our planning application is a significant achievement for Associated Architects LLP. We are excited to bring our vision for York Place to life and contribute to the ongoing regeneration of Newcastle-under-Lyme. This project represents a meaningful investment in the town’s future, and we look forward to working closely with the community to deliver a development that everyone can be proud of. Together, we will create a vibrant and sustainable space that will positively impact the lives of residents and visitors alike.

We are thrilled to announce that Curzon Wharf has received a unanimous agreement for hybrid planning. Associated Architects are excited to be part of the Curzon Wharf team. The £360 million development will rejuvenate this under-utilised site and become the catalyst for future growth in the area and beyond.

The net-zero carbon agenda is very much at the heart of our ethos and Curzon Wharf marks the next logical step for the practice as well as underlining its pedigree in designing low-energy buildings, including the UK’s largest non-domestic Passivhaus facility.

Associated Architects are working with engineering practice Cundall, to take a whole building approach to achieve deep energy efficiency. The scheme will deliver an optimised thermal envelope in line with Passivhaus principles – super insulated walls floor and roof, minimization of thermal bridging, triple glazing, maximisation of daylight, LED lighting and SMART controls. This will enable fossil fuels to be eliminated from the site, with heat pumps satisfying all heat demands.

Richard Perry, Director of Associated Architects said,

“It is a pleasure to work with Woodbourne Group on this exciting and innovative project. Curzon Wharf is a statement of intent regarding design quality and its vision for net-zero carbon mixed-use development is a bold response to Birmingham City Council’s call to action on climate change. These proposals will have a truly transformative impact, providing a powerful piece of sustainable architecture on a gateway site into the City Centre and a new vibrant destination along the historic canal network. Sky terraces, winter gardens and tree-lined piazzas will provide a substantial scheme of green urban infrastructure and external amenity, in line with the themes of Birmingham City Council’s ‘Our Future City Plan. We have worked closely with the Council to knit the scheme into the vision for Dartmouth Circus and the network of pedestrian routes, cycle paths, canals and public places.”

The site is laid out as a composition of sculptural forms rising in scale towards its northern peninsula onto Dartmouth Circus. On approach along the A38, Aston Expressway, the two towers offer their narrowest facades, referencing the proportions of the BT Tower further in the distance, as well as echoing the slender forms of the tall chimneys that once peppered the City’s skyline.

This 3-acre mixed-use development will include:

Boulton Tower – 53 storeys

Watt Tower – 41 storeys

Galton Skytree – 14 storeys

Office/R&D and life sciences building – 9 storeys, 12,000sqm

Amenity and retail spaces at ground floor will provide front doors and active frontage onto a comprehensive public realm scheme that will enhance access and activity onto the canal and promote links to future development beyond the ring road.

On approach along the canal, one of the towers will provide a dramatic stop-end to the view, drawing pedestrians, cyclists and potentially canal taxis northwards through Eastside. As such, the proposals have been considered, not only within the context of their immediate neighbours, but within the wider framework of Birmingham City Council’s adjacent ‘Knowledge Quarter’ masterplan, which the practice also worked on. The student accommodation contained within Watt Tower will provide a positive and welcoming living experience for students, like no other in the city.

The buildings will be wrapped in a homogenous checkerboard pattern of cladding, echoing the rich tones of the City’s red brick industrial architectural heritage, whilst the proportions of solid and glass and high insulation levels are carefully considered to meet the energy performance targets.

Tani Dulay – CEO Woodbourne Group added,

“Curzon Wharf isn’t just a development, it’s a manifesto that will position Birmingham as UK’s leading smart and sustainable city, helping to pave the way for the UK’s Green Revolution. It reinforces Birmingham position as the UK’s second city. It will act as a catalyst for the wider transformation of the Eastside area where a number of masterplans have been earmarked which otherwise would not be possible. It signposts Birmingham’s route to delivering transformational change to the city. It will promote social, cultural and economic exchange in a truly transformative urban neighbourhood.”

Plans have been submitted for our proposals to regenerate a key part of Newcastle-under-Lyme town centre. Currently the town lacks a significant cultural heart, preventing opportunities for people to gather and socialise which has a detrimental impact on the town centre. Proposals for the 65,000 sqft. York Place seek to rectify this issue with the addition of two four-storey buildings which will house retail, food and beverage, and commercial office space. These will sit alongside new public realm, featuring a landscaped external public square which will open up views within the surrounding conservation area and offer better connections.

This project ties in with the wider £30 million regeneration of the nearby Ryecroft area. The York Place project follows Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council’s successful Future High Streets Fund (FHSF) bid. It will designed as Net-Zero carbon in operation and aligned with the Council’s sustainability ambitions to achieve Net Zero by 2030.

Simon Tagg, Leader of Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council, said:

“York Place is an area that has an important position between the soon-to-be developed Ryecroft site and the wider town centre. We’ve been working closely with the developer and the proposals have been designed to fit in with the character of the town centre. Once this is completed, it will make a real difference to the area.”

James Hall, Director Associated Architects added:

“York Place will create a thoughtful new public area for Newcastle with its own character, and one that brings in commercial value as well. This scheme will give the historically important buildings more prominence whilst ensuring the scale of the public area doesn’t overwhelm Red Lion Square.”
